То́мас Дже́фферсон — американский государственный деятель, один из отцов-основателей США и авторов Декларации независимости , 3-й президент США, в 1801—1809 годах, выдающийся политик, дипломат и философ эпохи Просвещения. Основными событиями его президентства были покупка у Франции Луизианы и экспедиция Льюиса и Кларка . В 1778 году он разработал «Билль о всеобщем распространении знаний». Исследовал индейские захоронения. Джефферсон был главой комитета по созданию Декларации независимости.
