Последний в истории чемпион мира в тяжёлом весе по боксу без перчаток по правилам Лондонского призового ринга. Первый американский спортсмен, заработавший более 1 миллиона долларов. Салливан за время своих турне по стране нокаутировал по разным оценкам от четырёхсот до пятисот соперников в поединках, большинство из которых не было санкционировано никакими официальными властями, а многие и вовсе имели характер драки в питейном заведении.
