В общей сложности в период с 1919 по 1969 год Карлофф сыграл в более чем 170 фильмах, а также в многочисленных телесериалах, включая исполнение главной роли рассказчика в телесериале-антологии «Триллер» . Начав актёрскую карьеру в 1919 году с эпизодических ролей, в 1920-х годах Карлофф перебрался в Голливуд, где прорыв для него наступил после выхода фильма «Франкенштейн» , в котором он сыграл роль Чудовища.
